0871 Phone Number Homeworkers Jobs Scam
This scam was based around the offering well paid jobs to people who could work from home. The hook of this advert was to offer a wage rate slightly higher than minimum wage, plus the added benefit of working from home. This is how the scam worked:
- A job advert was placed in the classified section of freebie newspapers and on-line websites (usually costing nothing to place advert).
- The advert headline would be “Work From Home – earn £10 an hour – no experience required – for more info call 0871 XXX XXXX”.
- The advert appeared without any call charges and gave no further details about the type of work being offered.
- The caller now dialled the 0871 phone number unaware they they were being charged at up to 10P/minute.
- When the caller dialled the 0871 phone number they were immediately answered by a recorded message.
- The caller was then played a recorded message of a phone ringing for at least 60 seconds.
- This meant the caller thought they were yet to be connected, but in fact they had already been connected and were already being charged for the cost of the call to the 0871 phone number.
- Then after at least 60 seconds, the caller was played a message asking them to leave their details if they were interested in the job on offer and they would be called back.
- Obviously no one ever called them back as there never was a genuine job on offer.
- The scammers received about 20p from every caller, but as the all the adverts they placed were for free – the 20p was pure profit.
- Many callers would dial back several times in search of this well paid job not realising they were ringing up a larger phone bill, getting themselves into further debt.
The 0871 phone regulators are well aware of such job scams using 0871 phone numbers and issue very large fines for anyone who pulls such a scam.
